Kumble to quit ODI’s
Posted in: Cricket Players & MatchesIndian leggie Anil Kumble has announced that the World Cup will be his last one-day tournament and will bid goodbye to one-dayers after that.
Kumble who was recalled by the selectors in the recently concluded Windies and Lankan series performed moderately but still went and got the nod from the selectors to figure in the world cup squad. Kumble who’s been in and out of the side off late defended himself against criticism of his fielding ability, saying he could not suddenly become a Jonty Rhodes.
If one may recall, the 36 year old leggie made his debut in the one-day format against England in 1990 where he was declared Man of the Series. Kumble eventually went on to become an integral part of the Indian side and not to forget the role he has played in tests for India.
This WC would be his fourth and will surely like to wind up on a winning note. He has played in 17 World Cup matches with 28 wickets to his name so far. He is also India’s leading wicket-taker in both forms of the game, with 334 scalps in ODIS and 547 in Tests. His best figures will always be remembered for a long time when he took 6-12 against the West Indies in the Hero Cup Finals in 1993.
Harbhajan has been a replacement for Kumble off late, but India has always struggled to find a proper replacement for this bowler from Karnataka. He would surely have preferred adding another 100 scalps to his one day tally of wickets but he still has at least another two years left in him to play test cricket.
