Viru vs Robin

Posted in: My Corner

Comparing Virendra Sehwag to Robin Uthappa would be like chalk and cheese. I hate comparing players but considering the team that’s going to be picked for the WC I thought let me pen my thoughts.

Robin just went thru his baptism in international cricket in 2005 where as Viru did it in 1998-99 against the Lankans if my memory serves me right. Viru was a sensation of sorts who tore apart any bowling attack on his day, especially as an opener. He was tried as an opener when no one would volunteer to do the dirty job, so it was time to search for a scapegoat. When the scapegoat delivered the selectors were happy, now it’s back to square one—where to use Sehwag incase he scores against the Lankans?

It looks like he will score and if he doesn’t; will he get another two matches. What needs to be seen is the manner he scores his runs to get the selectors nod? Sehwag knows how important these two matches could be as it might make or break his career.

Let’s make no bones about it that Robin is a dasher who has got his head placed on his shoulders. He’s young and might play rash shots with a rush of blood but as time passes we need to groom him as Saurav, Sachin and Dravid may call it a day in a couple of years.

Robin is steadier than Sehwag I guess and the sooner he matures the better for him. I won’t be surprised to see both opening the one-day innings for India sooner or later. But all this would be subject to getting the right combination for the team.

India has groomed only batsmen over the years and not bowlers and the result is there for everyone to see. We need to identify roles and make every player realize that a career has to be played in phases or else doomsday is not far away.
