Sehwag’s Comeback
Posted in: My CornerVirender Sehwag had a sigh of relief when it was declared that he would get a chance to play in the series against Sri Lanka. It looks like the large hearted Dilip Vengsarkar wants to keep all options open before the squad for the world cup on 12th Feb is picked.
Sehwag was dropped from the Indian team for his dismal performance in the recently concluded South Africa tour. A string of low scores made the selectors drop him to go back and asses his failures and rectify them.
Agreed that Sehwag is aggressively dangerous and talented who can be devastating on his day but what does one mean by ‘On his day’, does it mean Sehwag will be tried and tested till he scores ‘On his day’. Is he a batsman who relies on luck more than his sensibilities and what if ‘ His day’ doesn’t come?
Great batsmen never rely on ‘their day’, they just believe in themselves and play their natural game. The manner in which Sehwag got out in the recent games was playing and edging deliveries pitched wide on the off stump and as he loves to cut, he just couldn’t resist the temptation.
All that Sehwag needs to do is be a bit patient and spent time at the wicket till he gets the feel of it especially wickets outside India. All go thru a lean patch but no better way than let your bat speak for you.
Chances are high that Veeru will open the innings against the Lankans and is sure to contribute on home pitches. Incase he scores and stakes a claim for a place in the world cup it might just add to the woes of the selection committee. May be the strategy is to have at least a couple of pairs to open in the WC.
Veeru and Robin Uthappa are openers who should not be batting at any other position. It’s always better to have a combination of youth and experience and what better than a left hand and right hand combination to unsettle the bowler.
