25th January- Mark makes a mark

1991

Mark Waugh made his Test debut in the fourth Test against England at Adelaide. Mark came in place of his brother Steve, who was dropped after a poor trot and broke the bittersweet news to his sibling. Mark Waugh went on to score a ton on debut and there on cement his place in the Aussie side for years to come. Although he made his debut 5 years after his twin brother Steve, Mark gradually came to be known as one of the most elegant on side player of all times.

1985

An 18-year-old Wasim Akram made his test debut today in the second Test between Pakistan and New Zealand at Auckland. He failed to score but managed to take 2 for 105, and Pakistan were trounced by an innings - but Wasim soon made his mark with 10 wickets in the next Test at Dunedin.

1976

Yet another player made his debut with a ton, who came from a cricket family- Surinder Amarnath, son of Lala Amarnath. Lala Amarnath was the first Indian captain to score a century on debut thus, making the first father and son duo in cricket to score centuries on debut. Surinder, the younger brother of Mohinder Amarnath was a left hand batsman who stroked 124 in his first test as India took a grip of the first Test against New Zealand at Auckland. India eventually won by eight wickets.

1952

This day marked the debut of one of the greatest all-rounders that the game has produced. Richie Benaud who made his debut at Sydney that year. He didn’t have much to do as Australia hammered West Indies by 202 runs - he made 3 and 19 and took 1 for 14, bowling Alf Valentine. It was an odd game: on a perfect pitch 19 wickets went down for 180 on the first day, with West Indies blown away for 78.
