Hanif Mohammad played the longest innings in test history. He batted for 970 minutes (more than 16 hours) to save Pakistan’s first Test against West Indies in Barbados. His mammoth 337 was at the time the second-highest score in Test history. In this match, Pakistan had followed on the small matter of 473 runs behind - they made 657 for 8 from a mere 319 overs.
1995
A great all round display from South African paceman Fanie de Villiers left Pakistan high and dry in a one-off Test at Johannesburg. First, he flashed 66 off 68 balls, including three sixes, from No. 10 and then he tore Pakistan apart with 6 for 81 and 4 for 27. A 324-run victory margin said it all.
1996
Chris Cairns maiden Test hundred against Zimbabwe at Auckland came off only 86 balls which included 10 fours and nine sixes. Only Wasim Akram, Nathan Astle, Matthew Hayden and Wally Hammond have cleared the rope more often in a Test innings.
1999
Umpire Ross Emerson raised hell when he no-balled Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing in the World Series match against England at Adelaide. Arjuna Ranatunga led his team off the pitch for a while, and was later involved in an ugly exchange with his English counterpart Alec Stewart. Graeme Hick’s fine century was matched by Mahela Jayawardene’s, and Sri Lanka, needing 303 to win, got home with one wicket and two balls to spare when Muralitharan hit the winning runs.
2001
One of the most amazing finishes in one-day history at Sydney where West Indies needed only 139 to win against minnows Zimbabwe but finally lost. Only Jimmy Adams (22) and Nixon McLean (40) reached double figures, with five of the batsmen out for 0, including Brian Lara.
