Vaughan back as England skipper
Posted in: Cricket News & UpdatesThere were eyebrows raised at the return of Michael Vaughan in the one-day squad. Doubts were looming large about his fitness when it was announced that Vaughan will not only play but also captain the side.
The selectors’ response has been highly unusual, may be keeping the forthcoming world cup in mind that they have taken a decision like this. Bringing Vaughan back at this stage is understandable with the drubbing they got in the tests series. Seems like the selectors have picked a specialist captain.
There’s no doubt that Vaughan is a fine test player, at times scintillating, but there is no way that he has proved his fitness after a year out with serious knee trouble. He has played three or four gentle warm-ups with a highest score of 27. The only time he made runs in the past year, with a score of 99 for Yorkshire, he ached so much that he realized he needed further surgery. The only time he played for England, his captain Strauss didn’t think it was worth giving him a bat.
England was never known for its one-day wonders, now that it has lost its first 20-20 opener against the Aussies, its to be seen whether Vaughan’s comeback is going to do any good to the sagging morale of the team.
