India’s opening woes continue
Posted in: Cricket Controversies & IssuesAs we were about to think that we have found the right opening combination in tests India finds itself back to square one. It’s been more than one and a half decades that we had specialist openers and since then it has been a trial and error method and most often have ended in disappointments.
The last five years have been just trying every player; Sehwag known to play in the middle order was given a chance and did deliver the goods for sometime. The problem was no one was clicking along with him. Out went Akash Chopra in came Wasim Jaffer, who enjoyed moderate success but whenever he scored Sehwag would get out early and vice versa.
Looks like make shifts openers are back for India, the opening slot is up for grabs yet again. May be if Sehwag scores in the final test against South Africa, he would get another chance as opener but what happens if he fail yet again.
Gautam Gambhir should be given another chance, infact a whole series to prove himself and settle down. It wouldn’t be a bad idea if they try the Aussie strategy which was when Michael Slater failed to provide good opening stands with Hayden they called upon Langer (a no.3 batsman) to open with the mind set that they were already one down. And the rest is history.
For the time being this problem might take a back seat as India plays only one-dayers for the next six months but the question still remains- what will happen then, should we cross the bridge when it comes?
