December 26, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day. How many know why it’s called Boxing Day? All that Cricket lovers in the sub-continent know is that at least 2 test matches are played on this day of which 1 test has to be against Australia in Australia.
Going by history, Boxing Day is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled by the English (the U.S. is the major exception), including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The day after Christmas where Christians follow the tradition of opening the alms boxes placed in churches over the Christmas season.
December 26 is also known as the Feast of St Stephen, often a day associated with outdoor sports and horse racing and hunting. By having Christmas Day and Boxing Day as holidays this allowed many people to take trips but also rejoin family members, which may have encouraged the tradition of families getting together at Christmas time.
