The Last Crusader
Posted in: Cricket Statistics & RecordsWith Shane Warne hanging up his boots the field is all left for Muttiah Muralitharan. With absolutely no competition left for this ace Lankan spinner, all we need to be seen is where does his wicket taking spree ends.
Warne with 699 Test scalps and 293 ODI wickets gives him a total of 992 international wickets. He might be aiming of adding another 8 more by the end of the ashes to take his tally pass 1000 wickets. Muralitharan compare to Warne is way ahead with 1099 wickets in all.
Coming close to him is Anil Kumble with 864 sticks but looks most unlikely to emulate Muralitharan as age is not on Kumble’s side.
Muralitharan is known as a wrist-spinner with a unique bowling action that begins with a “flapping wings” run-up, and culminates with an extremely wristy release. Although his career has been through many controversies, he is still considered the most destructive off-spinner of all times.
The rate at which he takes wickets (6 per test) and with another 2-3 yrs left in him, he might just end up with a total which one would have only heard of.
